About This Fundraiser
On the 29th of August 2024, one of our directors, Oliver Johnston will be travelling to Kathmandu, Nepal to attempt to reach Mount Everest base camp during a 16-day expedition through the Himalayas. This life-changing adventure is to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation.
Meningitis is a devastating disease that affects people of all ages, often striking without warning. This fundraiser aims to support the research and prevention efforts of the Meningitis Research Foundation, working tirelessly to save lives and improve the quality of life for survivors. Your participation and support can make a significant impact on this critical mission.
The expedition to Everest Base Camp is not just a trek; it's a statement of commitment to combat meningitis. He will be climbing to altitudes of 18,000 feet, with the hope to inspire and unite people, proving that together, we can conquer even the most daunting challenges. By undertaking this journey, he hope’s to demonstrate the resilience and strength required to overcome adversity, just as those affected by meningitis must do every day.

A few words from Oliver:
‘The Journey to Everest Base Camp (5,365m) & Summiting Kala Patthar (5,644m)
Over the last year I have done countless fundraisers for ‘Meningitis Research UK’. At the start of September I flew to Kathmandu to embark on the final challenge of my fundraising goal. To reach Everest Base Camp!
Reflecting back on this experience it was utterly surreal. The walk from Lukla up to Namche Bizzare through the woodlands and forests, walking hundreds of metres above the river bed on suspension bridges. To the vast mountains of the himalayers towering above us as we climbed up toward Gorak Shep and onward to base camp. It was truly breathtaking.
Perhaps the most euphoric moment was the sunrise in the himalyers on the morning we summitted Kala Pattar. After a hard few hours climbing in the pitch black with head torches on and the majority of people turning back and heading down. Myself and 6 others summitted at 5,644 metres. An incredible moment of joy and a sigh of relief.
As we slowly descended the sky glowed a little brighter as the sun began to rise. Ever so slowly the sun presented itself and emerged behind the peak of Mt Everest. A sunrise that was so perfect it was hard to believe. The highest high after the darkest moments of the whole trip just a few hrs before.
A reflection of life, those who are prepared to endure the hardship and keep moving forward will experience the greatest moments that life has to offer.
The total amount fundraised was £4,150! To everyone who donated, turned up to the events and shared this fundraiser. Thank you.
This will be an experience I never forget and hope everyone gets to experience the joy and challenges that this expedition has presented. An increidble experience with even better people.
After taking a moment to soak in the full experience I am excited for the next adventure! 🏔️’
